Children with developmental disabilities (DDs) experience forms of child maltreatment at higher rates than children without disabilities. Few programs are available at this time to prevent maltreatment in children with DDs. To address this need, a 16-week psychoeducational maltreatment prevention program was developed following in-part a chain model to program development research. A perceived efficacy study was conducted whereby the program's primary intended users, clinicians at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), reviewed summaries of treatment activities supported in the literature as effective to maltreatment prevention efforts. Clinicians were asked to rate which activities they believed would be most effective for the children and families seen at CHLA. Activities with the highest ratings were then incorporated into the curricula of a prototype psychotherapy manual for clinicians to further refine and facilitate these groups in the future. The program is based on a concurrent group model; a caretakers' group and a children's group meet separately but address parallel curricula, thus providing caretakers the opportunity to reinforce skills taught in the children's group at home and in the community for greater skills generalization. Five core areas of intervention emerged as significant factors in preventing maltreatment of children with DDs: (a) labeling feelings, (b) self esteem building, (c) establishing body rights, (d) sex education, and (e) specific abuse prevention strategies....
